Tide

Using gestural marks, I found great shapes to play with. I feel the busyness of the scene and a need to stop.

Let Me Rest a While

The dramatic pull of the tide as the powerful waves crash against the stone harbour walls. The deep slate grey clouds, heavy with the threat of rain. The sea is full of motion with expressive brushstrokes that suggest energy. The fishing nets hang unused, no fishing today!

Harbour Swell

Inspired by the Cornish coast. This is taken from a view from the road between Pendeen and St Ives, Cornwall. l have exaggerated the size of the headland Ther are hints of lichen and moss amongst the lively sea thrashing against the rocks.

Pendeen to St Ives

This abstracted view from the road from Pendeen to St Ives, Cornwall was inspired by the work of Peter Lanyon. The Sun light reflects the lime green grass that sits on the edge of the cliffs edging the sea.

Sun Light

The last of the series of paintings inspired by the Wylye Valley. The strong yellows of the spring rapeseed fields are calmed by the neutral greys, which contrast with the impression of the River Wylye.

Wiltshire Track

Follow the Edge

A track taking you up through the fields. Pinks, reds and yellows, bright and uplifting leading you towards the horizon.

Anticipate the Walk

Beautiful pinks, yellows and olive greens contained in a neutral grey. There is an early summer outside fresh feel.

Walled Garden

This painting works with the same colouring, apart from the deep blue that contrasts beautifully with the pink that sits nicely on top.

Pink and Olive

The pink peonies sitting in the garden, in full flower for a short time before the petals open wide and fall to the ground.

Peonies

Past the base of the oak tree the early morning sunlight streams through the young bluebells and catches the new growth of greenery in the woods, quiet and serene.

Spring Blue

This painting captures the essence of the pheasant, it's gorgeous colours used in layers from the intense dark of the birds body through to the light of the sun shimmering through the falling leaves.

Starting with gestural marks in charcoal, the painting was created after seeing a broken fence at the edge of an arable field, brambles were growing through it. I wanted to incorporate the idea of the surrounding colours in an abstract way.

Orange Dahlias

This painting developed by layering colour reducing the forms until I could see a story to tell. The blue sky tips down through the red cooled by the dark turquoise.

Strawberry Field

Using the same idea as 'The Leaves Fall' the wonderful colours of the Goldfinch were the inspiration for this piece.

Goldfinch

A play on the landscape, dark hedgerow tumbles down the hillside giving contrast to the pinks and oranges. See the evidence of the
workings on the lower layers peaking through.

Orange, Green and Blue

The rectangular white-washed houses are layered atop each other in a cascading pattern, echoing the slope of the hill. Their white surfaces aren’t pure but textured with smudges of pale blues and soft greys, The windows and doors are minimal with dashes of charcoal.
The beach is abstracted into horizontal bands of soft golden sand. The sea and sky are divided, with no hard line but the painterly marks of white surf separating them.

Sea View

An abstract interpretation of a late summer landscape where the crops are ready to be harvested. The rich, warm colours and the deep late summer greens of the trees and bushes are depicted here.

Late Summer Harvest

My interpretation of Salisbury Plain. The hardy grass that covers the plains.
Depicted by the golden yellows through to the pale greens.
There is a touch of water and the hedgerows make a beautiful contrast.

The paint has been placed on the canvas in layers, each layer requires a reaction. The paintings is completed when I can no longer react, I am done!

Echoes in the Dark

These two paintings were inspired by creating a series of small works on paper. I wanted to work in a quieter way. The colours are muted creams, greys and blues with a strong contrast of dark greys to turn your thoughts inwards.

Inner Space lV

This was the first of the quieter paintings. The accent of orange hanging off the tip of the strong dark line is perfect.
